Are you a Faithful follower?

Are you a faithful follower?

Being new to blogging, I have realized the importance of making sure each blog I read, or even the blogs I just come across randomly, knows: 1. I've spent some time on their blog and 2. If I spend much time at all, I make sure I follow them. This is important to me (and to a lot of bloggers out there) because I feel we overlook the fact that each of the blogs we land on are written by people, just like us... It's weird to think that we could spend time on their blog (maybe even bookmarking a project to do later) and that blogger didn't even know we were there! (except in the stats of course...) Why not take a minute to comment and say "I was here!"

So my challenge to you is: 1. When you come across a blog and find your self searching around....write a quick note to say "I was here!" 2. Follow their blog!

I use google reader to follow blogs, but I was annoyed that I could not see all the colors and details and inspiration from the pages of each blog. Which is when I found the handy dandy Next Button, which I love! It so awesome and makes commenting and letting people know that "I was here!" quick and easy :)

I have added a blog roll page to the top of my blog. Here you can add your blog and let me know "I was here!" :)

Happy Sunday!

Miracle Dancer

I have never mentioned this on here but thought I would share, since this is what is taking up a lot of time right now....

Miracle Dancer 2011 - Dublin, Ohio

Miracle Dancer is a annual Ovarian Cancer benefit dance concert that I started in 2008, while my mother was undergoing treatment for Ovarian Cancer. I am the director of the show (and I dance in it too!). Our mission is to raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer and funds for Ovarian Cancer patients in central Ohio. 100% of the proceeds are donated to Cancer Services at Riverside Methodist Hospital. To date we have raised over 20,000 dollars! This years show will be held: Saturday, April 9th, 2011 with concerts at 6pm and 8pm.

Last year we added a silent auction to the event and it was such a success we are doing it again. I am making a few things to auction off. But thought, maybe those who read my blog and my friends on flickr might have something that they would like to donate. If you do, please email me at: miracledancer@gmail.com.

Just wanted to share :)

Swapping Integrity Pledge

Photobucket

I am fairly new to the world of swapping, but as I have posted about....I love it! I mean seriously, who doesn't love getting surprise mail?! Well I have signed up for various swaps and of those swaps i have been left hanging twice. Makes me sad that people do that... If there is an issue just tell me! I get busy sometimes too...

Anyway, so I am taking the pledge. Will you join me?

{Handmade} Scrappy Pincushion Swap III

I am so far behind with my blogging it's a little ridiculous, one of these days I will be ahead of the game :). So watch for several upcoming posts on what's been happening at Blue-J Cottage!

I shared with you (here) the fabulous pincushions I received from RuthieQuilts. She did such a great job incorporating all my likes...vintage, red & aqua, wizard of oz, etc. I am still so thrilled with them! I cannot thank Ruth enough! [Thank You, Ruth!]

Now I would like to share with you the pincushion I made for my partner:

My partner was not very vocal within the group, which made it hard to decide what to do... I enjoy the thrill of "stalking" my partners to find out little tidbits about them and things that they like, so I can make something that is truly unique and personal to them. So this was a challenge since there was not much "stalking" to be done!

For my birthday my sister and brother-in-law got my the current Quilts & More magazine and a very generous gift certificate to Joann Fabric's! [Thanks Jill & Sean!]

The magazine has some great projects and the one that really appealed to me was the little Hamburger on the right hand side. It is a pincushion! How cute!! And a perfect little project for the swap!

So off to my sewing corner I went :) It turned out sooooo cute! Oh, and it got me singing...."Cheeseburger in Paradise!" "I like mine with lettuce and tomato...." :) (I sure hope my partner isn't a vegetarian...)
:)

{Scrappy Pincushion Swap 3} Sneak Peaks! {Scrappy Pincushion Swap 3} Cheeseburger in Paradise! {Scrappy Pincushion Swap 3} hint hint 2 {Scrappy Pincushion Swap 3} :)

I sure hope my partner likes it...I cannot reveal who that may be yet, as she has not received it yet.

Pattern notes [for those of you who may want to try it out!]:

I did end up modifying the pattern a little bit just because I found a few things that didn't quite work out the way I had hoped....

1. You need a 3.5" canning lid and band for the base of the bun. In the pattern it called for "3.5in -diameter canning jar lid with insert". I knew what it was asking for but when I went to the store it didn't describe it the same...so I was confused for about 10min while I stood there trying figure it out. I purchased the wide mouth jar lids & bands. I found mine at Kroger. It came in a package of 12 (I think I am going to be making quite a few of these...). It had no measurements on the box so I had to guess... Here is a link to something similar, so you know what you are looking for.

2. It does not tell you to cover the lid with fabric. I chose to, to give it s finished look. I used pattern C. And used glue on the under side only so it would not get the top greasy.... (ask me how I figured that out...HA!)

3. I added an extra layer of batting to the base, one under the band and one inside the band under the lid. To give it extra sturdiness. 1 could be a heavier batting

4. I chose not to sew around the outside of the lettuce...just personal preference.

5. The top bun is a little off in sizing if you go with the wide mouth lids (I did measure them and it measured at 3.5" but as I learned last night while sewing with my sister....I am not good t following patterns...or measuring...or counting really....oops!). So I added a 1/4 of an inch to the base of the top bun (pattern D) and the same to the top of the top bun (pattern C).

6. I used a thicker batting for the base of the top bun so that, again, it would be sturdier.

7. I used elastic instead of the 1x6" strip of fabric to hold the bun together.

8. I used felt for all inside pieces instead of the wool.

I hope you find these hints helpful when making this super cute summery project :) If you feel these aren't accurate, please let me know.... This is just what worked for me!

Happy Sewing and Swapping!

Crafter's-noon Delight! {iPad/Laptop Case}

So because my next project is a case for my iPad, I thought I would share some of the fun ones that I have found so far. Enjoy!
{if you decide to us any of these, come back and post link to the blog post/image so I can see! And be sure to share with the original poster too!}

{1}Film and Thread blogged about this Reversible Laptop Sleeve in Nov 2010. It is so cute! I love the elephant fabric, the fact that it is reversible and that is has no clasp to potentially scratch my iPad.

{picture belongs to Film & Thread}
PDF for Film & Thread's Reversible Laptop Sleeve

{2}Amy a la Mode blogged this very picture friendly, easy to follow Laptop Sleeve Tutorial in April 2010. {see link for pictures}

{3}The Cottage Home blogged this cutie double flapped Laptop / Kindle/ iPad Sleeve in October 2010.
It has great step by step pictures and I love the double flaps with button holes! So cute!

{4}Crap I've Made blogged this so fun Zippered Laptop Sleeve Tutorial in July 2010.
It has a great ruffle and flower detail. Would make a great wristlet too!

It feels like Christmas!

Yesterday was the day... I was so excited that it was March 11th I couldn't stand it.

Do you know what I was excited for?? If you remember back, last week I wrote about the announcement of the iPad 2 coming out and how it was my Christmas/Valentines/Birthday present from my fiancee. I have never been one to just go out and buy something the minute it comes out, ever. But Paul on the other hand is obsessed with apple and all of their products. And likes to splurge now and again too...

For example: He has been telling me for months that he wants the iPhone. He has had a blackberry for 2 years. Used it in the beginning for 2 months then decided to go back to a regular just talking and texting phone. So he did. The blackberry just sat there..... Unused. Until his regular talk and text phone died. (and I truly mean died. As in flash of the screen and won't turn on anymore, HA!). So he went back to th blackberry.....does he use it for all it's worth? Heck no! So WHY does he need an iPhone?! Anyway, back the the iPad....

I always know when Paul is up to something because he starts acting weird. For example, asking for things that he has never asked for before, making weird phone calls, getting all nervous and gitty, etc. Well it was Christmas eve-eve and he was asking me for construction paper.... What in the world does he need construction paper for... So my family does Christmas on Christmas eve, no "construction paper present". Paul and I do Christmas/Stockings on Christmas morning, no "construction paper present". Then Paul's family does Christmas on Christmas day, still no "construction paper present". So we get home on Christmas night and he still hasn't mentioned anything about the construction paper. So I ask {because I don't forget a thing} "so I never saw any "construction paper"....". He acted like he didn't know was I was talking about, of course!

He got ready for bed and then came back into my room with one last present!!!! I opened it and inside there was one of those folded paper game thingys {yes that is the technical term, :-P} We had to play the game to find out what the present was. And it was my choice of either an iPad or an iPod!!!

I couldn't believe it!! I was so excited!! Ahhhh!!

Yesterday was the day... It was quite an interesting day for one reason or another, but in the end it happened! I waited in line for 2hrs and got my iPad 2!

Did you get yours yet?

Do you already have one and have any apps you would like to recommend to me? I am looking for a blog and google reader app and getting the "next" button onto my iPad {that I blogged about recently....}.

Would love to hear from you!

My Wedding Dress

I decided awhile back that I wanted to make my wedding dress. For several reasons... I had been looking all over and hadn't found anything that I liked. I wanted a vintage dress, but seemed a little too hard since I would have to get it cleaned and maybe altered etc. I didn't want to shop at David's Bridal or any store like it. I didn't want to spend a fortune on my dress. I was starting to realize that this was harder than I thought. And I soon found out that Wedding dresses are OUTRAGEOUS in price and just not super unique. Oh and I also was looking for a short dress so I could show off my sassy shoes!
While shopping at the Country Living Fair in the fall of 2010 I found this pattern:
Wedding Dress?? Option 1 Wedding Dress?? Option 1
It was sooooooo cute! and it was only $4.50.
For Christmas I received a gift certificate to Sew to Speak from my Mom. I knew right away that I wanted to take the Personal Fit class and make this pattern. Sheila Brex is the instructor and she basically walks you through the dress making process. From measuring and adjusting the pattern, cutting it out to sewing it all together. The class is only two sessions but Sheila amazingly offered to meet with me another time to help me put it all together. I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! And it was so pretty :)
I used Swiss dot fabric over a bridal satin.

Back:

With a sassy flower I bought and some Red shoes:

I want to wear it everyday! But it has to wait until July 2nd, 2011..... Eeeee! I am getting excited!
Happy Saturday! -Julia

Waiting for Wednesday...

I have been waiting for this day for what feels like forever!

It's iPad 2 announcement day!!!

I know it sounds silly and probably hard to believe that I would care so much about when the iPad 2 was coming out... but believe it! I added all the rumor blogs to my twitter page and followed along as they announced and described the new iPad, one tweet at a time. (It was so much fun!) And then taa-daaaaaa! It's here!

Do you have the original iPad? Are you planning to get the new one?

Heartsy vs Groupon

Have you heard of Heartsy? I had never heard of it until Beth @ Modernjax posted this on her blog. It is Groupon for the artsy fartsy folk.... suh-weet!

Check it out and let me know what you think :)
